Roy Hodgson thinks England have 'good chance' for 2014 World Cup

Roy Hodgson believes England have a good chance of winning the 2014 World Cup if they qualify for the finals in Brazil.

England are currently second in their group after four games of the qualification campaign.

Hodgson is visiting Brazil to assess potential training bases for 2014.

"If we got here we would believe in ourselves, we would think that we have a good chance," he told BBC Sport's Dan Roan.

Draws with Ukraine and Poland have seen England go behind Montenegro in Group H. If England finish the group in second place, they would face a play-off, but Hodgson would be happy to qualify for Brazil by any means.

"If we don't succeed in being number one, I'd be more than happy to go into the play-offs.

"The important thing is we get one of those two positions. The group we are in was quite underestimated, but that is often the case.

"I can assure the England football fans there is nothing the players want more. They would have been more than happy to play a World Cup on the Galapagos Islands, let alone Brazil.

"They don't need motivation, they need to perform, and then we need that little bit of luck all teams need if they are going to get over the line."

Hodgson, who visited Brazil in August for a preliminary look at several venues for the 2014 World Cup, has been a guest speaker at this week's Soccerex Global Convention in Rio de Janeiro.

England face Brazil at Wembley on 6 February as part of the FA's 150th anniversary celebrations.

Brazilian officials announced last week that Brazil would also play England on 2 June 2013 in Rio's Maracana Stadium, which is currently undergoing substantial renovation work.

The Football Association did not comment on the announcement, but Hodgson is keen for the fixture to take place in the venue where England won on their last visit in 1984.

"Most coaches would love to have that on their CV - that one of the games they were involved in was against Brazil in the Maracana, the holy ground," Hodgson added.

"I'm desperately hoping they get the pitch ready in time. If they don't, it's still a great game and I'm still more than happy to play Brazil wherever they want to play. Except on the beach, then we'd have no chance!"
