Fleetwood Town sack manager Micky Mellon

Fleetwood Town have sacked manager Micky Mellon after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Aldershot.

The 40-year-old led the Cod Army into the Football League for the first time in their history in April after winning the Blue Square Bet Premier.

Saturday's defeat by the Shots was a third successive loss.

However, Mellon's sacking comes with Fleetwood currently sitting in seventh spot in League Two, just 10 points behind leaders Gillingham.

The club said in a statement: "Fleetwood Town wish to announce that manager Micky Mellon's contract has been terminated with immediate effect.

"We would like to place on record our sincere appreciation for what he has achieved during his time with the club."

The Scot played for Bristol City, West Brom, Blackpool, Tranmere (two spells), Burnley and Kidderminster before taking over as Fleetwood boss in September 2008.

Having initially taken the job as a part-time role while also working for Burnley's youth team he became the Highbury club's first ever full-time manager in January 2009.

Mellon led the club up to the Blue Square Bet Premier via the play-offs in 2009-10 and helped the club to 103 points and promotion to the Football League last season.

The 2011-12 campaign also saw the club reach the FA Cup third round for the first time, where they lost to local rivals Blackpool.
