Crawely Town striker Gary Alexander says he is relieved after arresting a run of over two months without a goal.

The 33-year-old, who had played every game this season before being rested against Notts County and Walsall, scored from the spot in the 3-0 FA Cup win against Chelmsford.

"It was a nice feeling. It was a relief when it went in," he told BBC Sussex.

"It was in the back of my head that I had to score the penalty to stop the drought, luckily I did."

Alexander, who had not scored since the 15 September, added: "When you're on a run like that you're just wondering about the next chance and whether you'll take it.

"In the last three games I've not played too badly. I wouldn't say I was missing loads of chances,

"They were half-chances, it wasn't one-on-ones, things were hitting the post, keepers were making saves."

And the former Brentford man, who has scored five goals this season, said he had no problems with being rested, despite being the side's captain.

"Just because I've been named captain doesn't mean I've got to play," he explained.

"It was important that I had a rest and hopefully I can come back and help the side now."
