Gillingham striker Deon Burton thrives on Rotherham boos

Gillingham striker Deon Burton says being booed by fans of former club Rotherham spurred him on during Saturday's game between the two sides.

Burton, who spent six months with the Millers in 2005, scored both goals in a 2-1 win at the New York Stadium.

"You'd have thought they'd have got over it. It was seven years ago.

"I'm old enough to not let it faze me. It didn't bother me in the slightest. You thrive on it," the 36-year-old told BBC Radio Kent:

"When they give you a bit of stick you want to give it back in the right way. I did that with the two goals," the former Jamaica international continued.

"We are told to silence the crowd with your feet. Luckily, that's what we did."

Burton, who joined the Gills on a free transfer in August, praised the side's work ethic against Rotherham as they picked up their first win in four league games.

"It was backs against the wall when we went 2-0 up and every player, to a man, stuck in there and worked hard to make sure we got the victory," Burton said.

"If you look at the last five or six games, we haven't been playing at our best but we are still top of the league."

He added: "We'd like to always play nice football by getting it down, put four or five passes in and get it out wide and cross it in the box. But it's not always like that.

"You've got to do the hard stuff, graft and get eleven men behind the ball, defend and work hard as a unit.

"We've got that balance that we can adapt and be rigid and hard to beat."

Meanwhile, Gillingham boss Martin Allen says Roman Vincelot is recovering well after being stretchered off against Rotherham.

The game was stopped for 10 minutes as the midfielder, who is on loan from Brighton, was fitted with a neck brace and taken to hospital as a precaution following a challenge with Jason Taylor.

"Apart from a headache and a stiff neck he is feeling fine," Allen told the club website.

"He will now be assessed by our doctor and we will review if he can start training on Thursday."
