Irish Premiership: Portadown 2-0 Glenavon

Ross Redman impressed as Portadown accounted for Glenavon in the Mid Ulster Premiership derby.

Glenavon's Conor Hagan was sent off for a 34th-minute challenge on Richard Lecky which resulted in a penalty but Andy Coleman saved Neil McCafferty's spot-kick.

However, left-back Redman jinked his way through the Glenavon defence to open the scoring on 42 minutes.

Redman's cross then set up Lecky's 49th-minute headed goal for the Ports.

Glenavon did have their chances in an entertaining opening half.

David Miskelly denied Andy McGrory on two occasions and the Glenavon player should have given the Ports keeper no chance on the second occasion as he fired straight at the home custodian.

Guy Bates and Ciaran Martyn both had the ball in the Ports net in the first half only for the efforts to be ruled out for offside.

The Ports wasted a glorious chance to take the lead on 34 minute as Coleman did brilliantly to save McCafferty's spot-kick.

The penalty came after ex-Ports player Hagan had been red carded for flattening Lecky in the box although the visitors claimed that Kris Lindsay had been fouled moments earlier.

However, the Ports did take the lead on 42 minutes as Redman waltzed his way through the Glenavon defence before blasting pass Coleman.

Redman's cross set up Portadown's second goal four minutes after the break as the intensity of the match dropped.

McGrory did miss a late Glenavon chance as the Ports took all three points.
