Middlesbrough have signed Kieron Dyer on a short-term deal following his exit from Queens Park Rangers earlier this month, boss Tony Mowbray has confirmed.

The 34-year-old winger has trained with Boro since his release by Rangers at the beginning of January.

"He's looked really good in training, nice and sharp," Mowbray told BBC Tees.

"The level he has played his football at over the years suggests he is very talented and he's shown that in training this week."

Dyer made seven first-team outings for Rangers before departing Loftus Road, scoring in the 1-1 FA Cup draw with West Bromwich Albion - his last game.

His debut could come against home-town club Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Having begun his career at Ipswich as a team-mate of Mowbray and assistant boss Mark Venus, Dyer joined Newcastle United for £6m in 1999 and made 305 appearances prior to his move to West Ham United in August 2007., external

Injuries limited the former England international to 35 appearances at Upton Park, and short-term moves to Ipswich and Queens Park Rangers followed.
