Former Northern Ireland U19 international Jonny Steele is set to play alongside Thierry Henry after joining MLS giants New York Red Bulls.

The 27-year-old midfielder from Larne signed a contract with the MLS giants on Wednesday after a successful season with Real Salt Lake.

Steele began his career with Wolves in 2002 and made five appearances for Ballymena United in 2005.

He also has three caps for the Northern Ireland U19s.

Steele represented his country at every level from U15 to U19 level and was part of the Northern Ireland U19 squad which participated in the UEFA championships in 2005.

After leaving Ballymena, his career flourished in America and he starred for ex-Northern Ireland international Colin Clarke's side Puerto Rico Islanders.

After just one successful season for Real Salt Lake, for whom he played 28 regular season games last season, he has been picked up by one of the biggest clubs in the MLS.

The New York club have French World Cup winner Thierry Henry, ex-Everton midfielder Tim Cahill and former Lyon and Brazil star Juninho on their roster.

"We are pleased to have agreed a contract with Jonny and look forward to his contribution this season," said Red Bulls' sporting director Andy Roxburgh.
