Alfreton Town: Nicky Law says fixture pile-up will affect run-in

Boss Nicky Law says the fixture backlog caused by the cold weather will have a huge impact on the relegation run-in but feels Alfreton are virtually safe.

Saturday's game at Braintree was called off and the Reds must play on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday this week.

But Alfreton are five points clear of the Blue Square Bet Premier relegation zone with eight games left and have games in hand on several clubs.

"Lots of teams have a real backlog now," Law told BBC Radio Derby.

"I think the weather will have a big say on the promotion and relegation. Teams are having to cram games in.

"It's tight down there. But games are running out for teams [below us] and it will be hard for them to pull back points on us.

"We are confident that another win or four points should do it."

Alfreton are at home against Tamworth on Tuesday, then are away against Braintree on Thursday before playing host to struggling Lincoln City on Saturday.

And Law has said staying in the division for a third consecutive season would be "fantastic".

"To have stayed in this league for two years on the trot will be incredible," he added.

"I am not trying to over-milk that one but it is a constant challenge to stay in this division with the finances and the facilities we have got. It's a tough job and my hat goes off to everyone at the club.

"Should we stay up it's another monumental achievement for the players and for me personally to stay at this level of football.

"If we can pick three or four points I think we will be okay, but if we could pick six or nine we will be in cloud nine."
