Linfield retain some hope of finishing second in the Premiership thanks to this win over Belfast rivals Glentoran.

Peter Thompson scored the winner in the fourth minute, nodding in from close range after Elliott Morris had tipped Matthew Tipton's header onto the bar.

Andy Waterworth, Stephen Carson and Richard Clarke had chances to equalise and Jimmy Callacher had the ball in the net but the referee blow for a foul.

The Blues lie seven points behind current second-placed team Crusaders.

David Jeffrey's side have not finished outside the top two positions for a decade.

After Thompson's strike, Ross Glendinning made fine saves from Waterworth and a curling Carson free-kick.

Carson went close with another chance and Clarke was off target with a shot before half-time.

Defender Reece Glendinning cleared a late Glentoran effort off the line.
