AFC Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe aware of promotion history

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has urged his side to make history and seal promotion to the second tier of English football for the first time since 1987.

The Cherries are second in League One and have four games remaining and Howe is fully aware of the scale of achievement awaiting his side.

"We are under no illusions that this is a big time in the club's history," Howe told BBC Radio Solent.

"So it would be a huge achievement, a great achievement."

The former Burnley boss added: "This club hasn't played Championship football [second tier] very much in its history. But we are still a long way off and are still not confirmed a play-off place yet so we're still taking it slowly."

The Cherries have won their last five consecutive games and Howe has hailed that as a "great achievement" but is targeting an elusive sixth straight win.

On four occasions since he returned, the club have strung together a five-game winning run, but on each occasion they have fallen at the sixth hurdle.

Howe is hoping to end that statistic against Notts County on Saturday.

"To win six games in a row would be a huge achievement," he said.

"When you look at it, it is a great achievement to have got that far [five games] but the fact we haven't got the sixth game surprises me and hopefully we can do it this time."

The Cherries could seal a play-off spot if results go their way this weekend and Howe admits it would be a confidence booster in their attempts to go on and seal automatic promotion

"It would give us great comfort knowing we had guaranteed a top six place," he said.

"A few weeks or months ago we never thought we'd be in this position at this stage of the season so we'll take that. But until we are guaranteed anything we will not look too far ahead.

"Four wins would give us a great opportunity but we are still dependent on other results.

"We can only influence our games and we have to win all our games if we can. Every game is of huge importance and we prepare for them the same way."
