Newcastle boss Alan Pardew wants Sunderland defeat to 'hurt'

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew says he will ensure his players are "hurting" after losing 3-0 to rivals Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park.

Pardew's side are five points above the relegation zone with five games left and face a tense end to the season.

The Magpies chief was upset his team allowed their rivals to win at the venue for the first time in 13 years.

"I will make sure it hurts the players," he said after a third defeat in four league games.

Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse had a goal, which replays showed was legal, ruled out for offside which would have levelled the scores after Stephane Sessegnon had fired the Black Cats ahead.

The hosts, who were knocked out of the Europa League 4-2 on aggregate by Benfica on Thursday, also lost goalkeeper Tim Krul to a dislocated shoulder which will rule him out for the rest of the season.

But Pardew was not in the mood for excuses.

Two of Newcastle's final five games are at home to Liverpool and Arsenal.

And Pardew is determined his side will stay clear of the bottom three between now and the end of the season.

"We've got to do some work with the team," he added.

"There's no Europa League left and we need to make sure we get our shape right and get ourselves disciplined and try to win games.

"This [result] won't leave me because it's our home and we don't want to get beaten by our rivals."
