Second-placed Derry City moved to within two points of Premier Division leaders Sligo Rovers with a 2-1 win over Shamrock Rovers at the Brandywell.

Barry McNamee scored with a looping header over Barry Murphy in the 51st minute and turned provider for Ryan McBride to power home a header from a corner with 10 minutes remaining.

Stephen Rice fired a shot past Ger Doherty in the final minute.

Sligo lost their 100% record thanks to a 2-0 defeat by St Patrick's Athletic.

Shamrock Rovers created the better chances of a disappointing first half as Billy Denehy fired a speculative effort well wide.

Ronan Finn saw his stinging shot turned round the post by Doherty and also shot past the post.

McNamee's goal edged the Candystripes ahead, before Karl Sheppard headed wide of the target for the visitors.

McBride's header made the points safe and Rice's fine strike was a mere consolation.
