Women's Super League: Arsenal salvage a point at Lincoln
- Published
England striker Ellen White rescued a point for current holders Arsenal with a late equaliser in their Continental Cup group game at Lincoln.
Birmingham City earned a 2-0 win at Bristol Academy in Thursday evening's other group game.
The result ended Bristol's 100% start to the season.
The competition features the eight Super League teams split into two groups, with the top two in each qualifying for the semi-finals.
Lincoln 1-1 Arsenal
Arsenal were chasing the game from the 23rd minute, when England winger Jess Clarke shot the home side in front from a Martha Harris cross.
The Gunners almost equalised immediately but right-back Alex Scott's goalbound drive was brilliantly saved by England colleague Karen Bardsley.
Striker Carla Cantrell twice went close to increasing Lincoln's lead with shots that narrowly missed the target.
But the visitors were doing most of the pressing and drew level eight minutes from time when a cross from winger Gemma Davison was converted from close range by White.
Bristol Academy 0-2 Birmingham City
Bristol were brought down to earth four days after reaching the FA Cup final with a well-earned win against Lincoln.
They were second best against Blues, who took the lead when England striker Rachel Williams headed home a Jade More cross on the half-hour.
The visitors' lead was doubled 20 minutes into the second half, striker Kirsty Linnett drilling in a close-range shot following a Jo Potter corner.
Academy failed to produce any clear-cut chances and Blues were well worth their first win of the season against Super League opposition.
