Roberto Martinez says Wigan will continue to battle

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez says his players will not give up on Premier League survival despite Tuesday's damaging 3-2 home defeat by Swansea.

"We never give up and we never throw the towel in," said the Spaniard. "This football club will never do that.

"We had an incredible opportunity against a team in mid-table that have not won for a while. You have to accept we shot ourselves in the foot."

Wigan, who led twice against Swansea, are three points adrift of safety.

Martinez said injuries played their part in the loss. Antolin Alcaraz missed the game, while and Maynor Figueroa have been ruled out for the season.

Ronnie Stam, who made his comeback as a substitute against the Swans, also went off injured and may have broken his leg.

"The many injuries we have at the back showed," said Martinez, whose side meet Manchester City in Saturday's FA Cup final at Wembley.

"We played sloppy balls and made bad decisions.

"Defensively, we are so lacking with bodies and important players. That has a massive say. Keeping clean sheets is always important."

Wigan have two games remaining and will be relegated if Sunderland, Norwich and Newcastle all get at least a point in their respective league games on Sunday and the Latics lose against Arsenal next Tuesday.
