Real Madrid celebrate

Barcelona will have to wait to wrap up the La Liga title after Real Madrid trounced Malaga 6-2 on Wednesday night.

Barca would have sealed their 22nd league title if Jose Mourinho's side had dropped points at home.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty but also scored his 200th goal for Real since leaving Manchester United, with Malaga having defenders Sergio Sanchez and Martin Demichelis both sent off.

Barca can now seal the title when they play Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Real took an early lead as Raul Albiol headed home, but Roque Santa Cruz levelled before Malaga were reduced to 10 men when Sanchez pulled Ronaldo down in the box.

Willy Caballero saved the penalty with an outstretched foot, but Ronaldo scored four minutes later with a free-kick and then teed-up Mesut Ozil who danced past two defenders to make it 3-1.

Vitorino Antunes momentarily reduced the deficit with a wonder strike before Karim Benzema made it 4-2 from Ronaldo's cross in first-half injury time.

Demichelis was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Ronaldo before Ozil went over awkwardly and appeared to injure his right knee.

Former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric and Angel Di Maria then rounded off the scoring.

Earlier in the evening Atletico Madrid guaranteed they will play Champions League football next season with a 3-1 win over Celta Vigo.
