Women's Super League: Bristol overtake Chelsea with win

Bristol Academy leapfrogged Chelsea into the Women's Super League top spot with a well-earned 2-0 home victory.

Central defender Jemma Rose and Spanish striker Natalia hit the goals early in the second half to maintain the WSL's only 100% record.

Bristol were in control for the majority of the game, though they were unable to create any clear-cut scoring opportunities in the early stages.

The first on-target goal attempt came at the other end, Brazilian midfielder Ester Dos Santos forcing goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain into a 34th-minute save.

But the home side were quickly back on top, and three minutes before half-time striker Natasha Harding's 18-yard shot was well saved by keeper Shannon Lynn.

Academy then started the second half at a blistering pace and went ahead when Rose headed in captain Corinne Yorston's inswinging 48th-minute corner.

Natalia doubled the lead two minutes later, the Spaniard running at the defence then striking home a 12-yard shot for her fifth goal of the season.

And a third goal almost arrived in the 67th minute as midfielder Lucy Staniforth smashed a 25-yard drive against the crossbar.

Chelsea attempted in vain to fight back as Bristol maintained their grip right to the end of an entertaining game.

Victory lifted Academy two points clear of Blues - and with a game in hand - at the top of the table.
