Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink named Royal Antwerp manager

Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been appointed the new manager of Belgian second division side Royal Antwerp.

Hasselbaink, 41, has signed a one-year deal with the club, which was relegated from the top division in 2004.

"This is a fantastic club that has been underachieving for several years," the former Netherlands international told Antwerp's official website., external

"Our first goal is to challenge for promotion and build from there."

Hasselbaink played for Chelsea from 2000 until 2004 and also had spells at the likes of Leeds United, Atletico Madrid and Cardiff before retiring in 2008., external

He was coaching at Championship side Nottingham Forest until January.

Antwerp won the Belgian league title on four occasions before their relegation to Division Two nine years ago.

Chairman Gunther Hofmans said: "We wanted to do this for our fans and supporters who have been great over the years during a difficult period.

"We urge them to get behind the new manager and the new players that will be coming in this season, in what we hope will be an exciting new chapter in the club's history."
