Brazil v England: Player ratings from the Maracana

Brazil v England

England drew 2-2 with Brazil in the Maracana in a friendly on Sunday.

The hosts dominated the first half, with Joe Hart making a number of quality saves, and took a deserved second-half lead through striker Fred.

England fought back well with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wayne Rooney scoring to put Roy Hodgson's side on course for a surprise victory.

However, Brazil equalised shortly after through Paulinho to earn a draw.

Here, BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty assesses the individual performances of the England players.

Joe Hart (Goalkeeper) - 9

Magnificent in keeping England in the game when they were under siege in the first half. Made some outstanding saves on a night the Manchester City keeper will never forget.

Glen Johnson (Right-back) - 6

Uncertain moments in an England defence that came under sustained pressure and had no chance to demonstrate his prowess as an attacking force.

Leighton Baines (Left-back) - 5

Everton defender was chosen ahead of Ashley Cole but picked up a knock early on and did not last the first half.

Gary Cahill (Centre-back) - 6

The Chelsea defender had a nervy first half - he was certainly not alone there - but got better as the game went on with a couple of trademark blocks.

Phil Jagielka (Centre-back) - 6

Found life tough in the first half but is always determined and resolute.

Phil Jones (Midfield) - 5

Looked out of depth, perhaps understandably, when deployed in midfield against the mobile and skilful Brazilians. Surely central defence will be his eventual England home.

Michael Carrick (Midfield) - 6

Quiet night for Carrick and had little chance to influence the game. Barely saw the ball in the first half.

Frank Lampard (Midfield) - 6

Worked hard but was uncharacteristically wasteful on the ball as Brazil dominated possession in the first half. Had one shot saved and did emerge as a steadying influence as England improved in the second half.

James Milner (Left wing) - 5

Put in his usual shift but influence was peripheral and had little impact. Had one shot deflected just off target as England finally applied some pressure after the break.

Theo Walcott (Right wing) - 5

Poor night for Walcott - did not build on the promise of his display against the Republic of Ireland and missed a good first-half chance.

Wayne Rooney (Striker) - 6

Mixed night for Rooney. Isolated for the first half and missed one very good headed opportunity before putting England ahead late on. Goal will be a real lift.

SUBSTITUTES

Ashley Cole: Was left out of the starting line-up but introduced after the injury to Baines. Solid and almost created a goal with an inviting late cross that found no takers. 6.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: The youngster who came on as substitute enjoyed a moment he will remember forever with a stunning low finish for England's equaliser. 7.

Jack Rodwell: Brief appearance as substitute. 5.
