New Juventus striker Carlos Tevez says he is proud to wear the team's famous number 10 jersey after completing a £12m move from Manchester City.

The Argentina international, 29, is the latest player to take a shirt worn previously by Alessandro Del Piero, Michel Platini and Roberto Baggio.

"I'm aware of the great effort Juventus has made to bring me here," Tevez said.

"I am aware of the great responsibility of playing for the club so this number is certainly a great challenge."

The shirt has been unclaimed since former Juventus captain Del Piero moved to Sydney FC last summer.

But Tevez insists he will not be weighed down by expectations, pointing out that he followed Diego Maradona in taking the number 10 shirt at Boca Juniors.

Maradona, who captained Argentina to victory at the 1986 World Cup, played for Boca Juniors from 1981 to 1982.

Tevez, who appeared for the Argentine club between 2001 and 2004, said: "Top players have worn it before and I was number 10 with Boca before, and Diego Maradona played in it too.

"The great responsibility is now that I'm going to play in this great club so certainly the greatest challenge is to do my best.

"Obviously I didn't want to forget Del Piero, who was the last player to wear number 10. He is a person and player that I greatly respect and who certainly represents an emblem and symbol of esteem.

"It is a great pleasure and honour to wear this jersey with his number."

Juventus reached an agreement with Manchester City to buy Tevez on Tuesday. Hundreds of Juventus fans turned up at Milan's Malpensa airport to welcome the forward.

His arrival was confirmed on the Juventus Twitter account, which published a picture of him by a picture of him beside club president Andrea Agnelli., external

Tevez will team up with Juventus coach Antonio Conte for pre-season training on 12 July.

The striker, who left Boca Juniors for Brazilian club Corinthians in 2004, arrived in England when he joined West Ham in 2006.

He spent two years with Manchester United from 2007 before moving to their neighbours City in a £25.5m deal.
