Reading boss Nigel Adkins not worried about pre-season results

Reading manager Nigel Adkins insists pre-season results are not important.

The 48-year-old is embarking on his first full campaign in charge of the Royals after taking over from Brian McDermott last term.

"I'll say it now, for me pre-season results are totally irrelevant," Adkins told BBC Radio Berkshire.

"It's not about being ready for the first game of the season, it's about the 46 that we're going to play so that come the season end we are on top."

He added: "The object is to get to a point so that I can select the team against Ipswich Town with everyone ready and available.

"It's about making sure we get the patterns of play we want and that everyone gets sufficient game time."

Reading are aiming for a immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last season and, despite already bringing in Wayne Bridge, Danny Williams and Royston Drenthe, Adkins is not ruling out further signings.

"We're pleased with the size of the squad and we're looking strong but I'm sure there might be one or two more additions to come along the way," he said.

"We know what's expected and it's about us finding a way of winning games of football. It's going to be a long, challenging campaign."
