Burton Albion goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson has been forced to retire because of a knee ligament injury.

The 28-year-old, who began his career with Crewe Alexandra, joined the Brewers on a short-term contract from Port Vale in September 2012.

He became the first choice but suffered a knee injury and despite returning to the side and agreeing a new deal in February, he has not fully recovered.

"It's disappointing, but I have to look after my long-term health," he said.

Tomlinson made 25 appearances last season but ruptured his posterior cruciate ligament in October.

He returned to the side three months later but exploratory surgery on his left knee in the summer revealed severe scar tissue preventing movement of the knee, while tests also showed a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament.

Tomlinson decided to retire after he was advised that any further injury would result in him being out for a very long time.

"I'll miss being involved at Burton and have very much enjoyed my time here but I'll now explore options outside of football and look forward to making a new start in a different capacity," he added.

Manager Gary Rowett said: "Tomo was excellent for us last season and an integral part of the team.

"His retirement is naturally sad news, however, I have no doubt that he will succeed in whatever he decides to do next and we wish him all the very best."
