Mark Hughes will captain Morecambe next season after the defender signed a two-year contract with the League Two club.

Hughes, 26, was a free agent having been released by relegated Bury at the end of the 2012-13 campaign.

"He is a great talker as well as a good defender and will be an excellent captain for us," Shrimps manager Jim Bentley told the club website., external

Hughes and Padraig Amond will feature in a friendly against Burnley at the Globe Arena on Tuesday.

Ex-Accrington striker Amond has been training with Morecambe and Bentley has said he would like to add the player on a permanent basis.

Bentley added: "We have been back in training for a couple of weeks now and things have been looking good.

"The lads look really sharp but it is all about games and I'm looking forward to coming up against Burnley. They will be tough opponents but that is what you want."
