Kevin Davies: Preston North End sign ex-Bolton & England striker

League One side Preston North End have signed former England striker Kevin Davies on a two-year contract.

Davies was released by Bolton Wanderers at the end of last season after 10 years at the Reebok Stadium.

The 36-year-old scored 84 goals in 407 appearances for Bolton, 67 of them in the Premier League.

"This was the first club I came to when I returned from holiday and I was impressed from day one," Davies told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"The club have backed me with a two-year deal and I know I can do a job here for the two years.

"I'm at the stage of my career where I want to enjoy my football, work hard and be part of something successful.

"This ticked all the right boxes for me. I know it's a step down in leagues, but I wouldn't have joined if I didn't think we were going to gain promotion next year."

Speaking last month, Preston manager Simon Grayson said he hoped he had done enough to convince Davies to join North End.

"I'd like to think we've got certain things that will be in our favour," said Grayson.

"There might be other things that are not, but hopefully we've ticked enough boxes to suggest this is the right football club for him at this stage."

Davies, who has also played for Chesterfield, Blackburn and Southampton, earned an England cap against Montenegro in October 2010.

He is Preston's fourth summer signing, joining defender Tom Clarke, winger Chris Humphrey and goalkeeper Declan Rudd, who has returned to Deepdale on loan from Norwich City.
