Rochdale survived an early scare against Hartlepool to begin their League Two campaign in emphatic style.
Dale keeper Josh Lillis foiled Jonathan Franks and Anthony Sweeney before Scott Hogan turned two visiting defenders to slot in the opener.
Christian Burgess felled Matty Lund in the area, allowing George Donnelly to convert from the spot for 2-0.
Ian Henderson rounded off the victory with a clipped finish over the outrushing Scott Flinders.
