League One Notts County hung on to beat Fleetwood in the Capital One Cup first round despite Manny Smith's dismissal.

The Magpies went behind when Gareth Evans lobbed Bartosz Bialkowski, but Enoch Showunmi and Danny Haynes scored to give them the lead at the interval.

And they seemed in total control when Callum McGregor curled home with 17 minutes to go to make it 3-1.

But after Smith was shown a second yellow card, David Ball found the net late on to make County sweat.

Smith's mistake had let in Evans for the game's opening goal, but his team-mates appeared to have made amends with Showunmi planting home a header from McGregor's cross before Haynes followed in to score after Joss Labadie's header hit the post.

The game appeared safe when Celtic loanee McGregor scored with the help of a deflection, but Smith's clumsy foul on Ball left his team a man down and struggling.

Ball shot home five minutes after Smith's dismissal but, despite applying pressure, the League Two side could find a third to force extra time.
