Carlisle United have signed veteran defender Danny Butterfield, who was a free agent after his release by Southampton at the end of last season.
Butterfield, 33, has scored 14 goals in 490 games during a career which has taken in spells at Grimsby, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Saints and Bolton.
Last term, the Boston-born full-back made eight appearances, six of which came on loan at the Trotters.
"He knows the game inside out," manager Greg Abbott told the club website., external
"Danny has played consistently well at a high level. He has that bit of knowledge and experience.
"We invited him up and he has been extremely bright and positive from the moment he got here.
"He's a strong character and he's already fitted in with the group."
