Danny Swanson: Peterborough midfielder lifts 'grumpy' mood

Peterborough midfielder Danny Swanson has said he needed a pep talk from his wife to lift his mood this season.

The 26-year-old made his first start of the campaign in Tuesday's 6-0 League Cup win over Reading.

"I thought I was fit coming back and I wasn't. The gaffer told me and I got the grump for a couple of days.

"The gaffer's seen it. To be fair my missus has told me you can't go in every day grumpy," the Scot told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"I had a nice chat with the manager, he told me what I needed to do and I put my head down."

Swanson joined Posh from Dundee United two summers ago, but has been restricted to just 10 league starts.

He admitted he was not up to speed when he returned to training in pre-season, but he staked a claim for a place in Darren Ferguson's side with a superb solo goal against the Royals.

"I didn't play as many games as I wanted in pre-season, and the gaffer told me I hadn't been good enough," he said.

"At the time I didn't believe him. The more I thought about it I saw he was right.

"Danny Kearns had come in and done really well. He got the shout and deserved his chance. And because of the way they've been playing I've not had much of a chance."
