Sheffield Wednesday: Anthony Gardner faces Achilles surgery

Sheffield Wednesday captain Anthony Gardner could miss a large part of the season after being told he needs surgery on an Achilles injury.

The 31-year-old had to leave the pitch in the first half of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough.

"Anthony will see a specialist in London and have an operation," boss Dave Jones told the club website.

"It's a blow to the boy and the team because he was playing very well and had a good start to the season."
