Wigan have signed Manchester United's Nick Powell on a season-long loan.

Powell, 19, made just six appearances for United since joining from Crewe Alexandra last summer for around £6m.

In joining the FA Cup holders, he follows in the footsteps of fellow United midfielder Tom Cleverley, who spent 2010-11 on loan at Wigan.

"We obviously had Tom on loan and I think United were happy with the job we did with him, it's good news," said Latics chairman Dave Whelan.

England Under-19 international Powell, a product of the respected Crewe youth system, scored against Wigan on his debut in a 4-0 win Old Trafford.

He made two appearances in the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson, but has been allowed to move on a temporary basis to a club which will allow him to remain settled in the north-west of England.
