England battled to earn a point against Ukraine that moves them one point clear in their World Cup qualifying group with two games remaining.
Frank Lampard went close for England late on but they had to settle for 0-0 draw after the hosts had a number of chances at Kiev's Olympic Stadium.
BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty gives his assessment of all the players used by England:
JOE HART (GOALKEEPER) - 6

Still not at his best and looked particularly uncertain early on. Did not have much work to do after the interval.
KYLE WALKER (RIGHT-BACK) - 5

Unconvincing throughout. Given a tough time as Ukraine made him an early target and he was booked for a rash foul late on that gave Ukraine a free-kick in a dangerous position.
GARY CAHILL (CENTRE-BACK) - 8

Excellent performance from Chelsea's defender. Outstanding in the early stages when England were under siege.
PHIL JAGIELKA (CENTRE-BACK) - 6

Improved as the game went on and played his part as England achieved a crucial clean sheet.
ASHLEY COLE (LEFT-BACK) - 7

As dependable as ever. A reassuring presence among a fair amount of uncertainty at the back for England.
STEVEN GERRARD (MIDFIELD) - 6

As usual took responsibility in central midfield and this was no night for heroics.
JACK WILSHERE (MIDFIELD) - 5

Tough night for Wilshere. Too easily shrugged off the ball and conceded possession far too often. Poor.
FRANK LAMPARD (MIDFIELD) - 6

Very quiet night on his 100th appearance as England struggled to exert authority in midfield.
JAMES MILNER (FORWARD) - 6

Tireless as ever but rarely had an impact. Picked for his reliability and stability so on that basis will have satisfied his manager.
RICKIE LAMBERT (FORWARD) - 6

Hard night's work for Southampton's striker as he became acquainted with the tough realities of international football on foreign soil. Little supply or support to work with.
THEO WALCOTT (FORWARD) - 6

Little impact or chance to use his pace against the Ukraine defence.
ENGLAND SUBSTITUTES
Ashley Young (for Wilshere 67 mins) - 5

No serious contribution during his brief appearance.
Tom Cleverley (for Walcott 87 mins) - 5

Only on for minutes as Hodgson shored up midfield.
