Kris Commons could return to the Scotland squad

Kris Commons says he has not closed the door on making a Scotland comeback.

The Celtic midfielder took his goal tally for the season to six in Saturday's 2-0 win over Motherwell.

Commons ended his Scotland career in May after 12 caps, but admitted he could be tempted into a return one day.

"I never left on bad terms," he said. "If there was an opportunity to return in the near future where I felt I could offer something to Scotland I'd certainly think about it."

And he added: "I always keep an eye on the results and who's playing, I always wish our boys the best. But at this moment in time I'm just concentrating being the best I can be for Celtic.

"A lot of people do have second thoughts, and I think when I am playing the way I am I think I could offer something.

"I'm 30 years old now and I think that the little time that I do get to spend with my family, and go away on holiday and stuff like that, it's benefited me more and I am putting in better performances week in, week out for Celtic."

Commons was a stand-out as Neil Lennon's side leapfrogged Inverness Caledonian Thistle to go top of the league, but he is refusing to set himself any personal targets.

He said: "I'm kind of playing with no pressure. I think when you set targets, and start playing with figures in your head, you can start getting a bit lacklustre in your performances and focusing far too much on the goal scoring.

"It's difficult because I always feel I can do better. I felt I should have scored the first half chance when I was put through by Virgil [Van Dijk].

"No matter how well I've done in a game - whether I've scored or assisted goals - I always look at the negative parts to try and improve my game, to make me a better player and I think that's the aspects I do concentrate on.

"It gives me the hunger to carry on improving."

The Hoops have five more points than they did at this stage of last season, and have their eye on going the season unbeaten.

"We have got targets for trophies," said Commons. "We want to win the double now, obviously we're out of the cup.

"The Champions League this year is a massive bonus and you have to perform at the weekend to get the opportunity to play the likes of Barcelona or Ajax, and everyone wants to be involved in that.

"Obviously, you have to have a little bit of lady luck along the way, and certainly we've got some tough games especially away from home.

"It's vitally important that we keep our best players fit. We've lost Adam Matthews, and it looks like probably three months, so that's a massive blow.

"We've got really good players to come back in the squad and make us stronger, so hopefully they'll be chomping at the bit, and you just never know what can happen in football and maybe we can go unbeaten."
