The 24-year-old has enjoyed an impressive year, which culminated in his world record £85m transfer from Tottenham to the Spanish giants.

Wales captain Ashley Williams was named club player of the year, while his Swansea City team-mate Ben Davies won the young player of the year award.

Jess Fishlock was the women's player of the year, repeating her 2012 award.

Bristol Academy's Angharad James was named women's young player of the year, while Lauren Price of Cardiff City Ladies is the women's club player of the year.

Port Talbot Town stalwart Leigh De-Vulgt was voted the Welsh Premier clubman of the year, and Bryn Powell and Peter Nicholas won the FAW merit award.

As well as winning the main award, Bale was also voted the fans' player of the year.

The awards, voted for by journalists and broadcasters, cover the period from October 2012 to October 2013 and were presented at a dinner at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.
