England v Montenegro: How the players rated

England powered to a 4-1 victory over Montenegro to move within one victory of qualifying for next summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Andros Townsend was England's inspiration, helping to set up their opener before scoring an excellent third goal to seal a fine debut for the Tottenham winger.

BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty gives his assessment of all the players used by England on a fantastic night at Wembley:

JOE HART (GOALKEEPER) - 6

Few alarms for a keeper who has been heavily criticised recently. Saw one shot from Stevan Jovetic hit the bar but also saved well from Dejan Damjanovic's header.

KYLE WALKER (RIGHT-BACK) - 6

Mixed performance again but can never be faulted for effort or commitment - but is he true international class?

GARY CAHILL (CENTRE-BACK) - 6

Quiet night as England spent most of the time attacking, but solid when called upon.

PHIL JAGIELKA (CENTRE-BACK) - 6

Like Cahill, reliable - but may face a bigger test in the shape of Poland's Robert Lewandowski on Tuesday.

LEIGHTON BAINES (LEFT-BACK) - 8

Top class. Gave England a real attacking outlet, especially in the first half. Nothing to choose between the Everton defender and Ashley Cole.

ANDROS TOWNSEND (RIGHT MIDFIELD) - 9

Roy Hodgson's surprise choice and an outstanding England debut. Created the first goal, scored a superb third and was a real threat throughout. Man of the match.

STEVEN GERRARD (MIDFIELD) - 6

Not quite as influential as normal but a calming influence and might have had a goal at the end only for Wayne Rooney's pass to fall slightly behind him.

FRANK LAMPARD (MIDFIELD) - 6

Quiet night for Chelsea's veteran and was substituted by Michael Carrick for the final quarter of the game.

DANNY WELBECK (LEFT MIDFIELD) - 6

Busy night out on the left flank for Manchester United's striker. Contributed to a couple of goals as well.

WAYNE ROONEY (FORWARD) - 7

Always dangerous and made that vital breakthrough. Remains a player England cannot afford to be without.

DANIEL STURRIDGE (FORWARD) - 7

Had moments of frustration, especially in the first half, but never stopped working and got his reward with that injury-time penalty.

Michael Carrick (for Lampard 64 mins) - 5

Saw little of the ball when he came on as England remained in control.

Jack Wilshere (for Townsend 80 mins) - 5

No time to make any impact.
