Gary Thompson celebrates scoring for Ballymena against Dungannon

Ballymena secured their first win in seven Premiership matches with a narrow success away to Dungannon Swifts.

United were in front after 63 seconds as Gary Liggett beat David McCullough and finished with a shot that squirmed under keeper Gareth Buchanan.

Gary Thompson scored from close-range to make it 2-0 before Stefan Lavery pulled one back for the Swifts.

Allan Jenkins smashed in number three for Ballymena with Darren Boyce netting for Dungannon early in the second half.

Boyce found the net after Matt Hazley's back-heel had found Terry Fitzpatrick whose effort was touched in by the former Coleraine and Glentoran front man.

Dungannon pushed for a goal to avoid falling to a third consecutive Premiership defeat.

Grant Hutchinson had a 25-yard shot well saved by Sky Blues keeper Dwayne Nelson who also kept out Hazley's stoppage-time free-kick.

Despite the victory, Glenn Ferguson's Ballymena remain in 10th place, but they are now level on points with Coleraine and just one behind Dungannon.
