Guernsey FC boss Tony Vance thrilled by 'brave' display

Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance had high praise for his players' "brave" display to beat high-flying Hastings United.

The Green Lions secured a 2-0 win on Wednesday against a team many have tipped as potential league winners.

"The boys did absolutely everything they were asked to and more," Vance told BBC Guernsey.

"They passed the ball well and were brave and got their rewards. They took the game to Hastings and no-one can deny that we deserved to win the game."

The victory - thanks to Dom Heaume's strike and Hastings keeper's own goal - was Guernsey's first in five games and moved them back to fifth in the Isthmian League Division One South table as they maintained Vance's hope to "stay in the chasing pack" for as long as possible.

"I thought we were good value for the victory," said Vance.

"We pretty much controlled the game and opened them up numerous times. I asked them to play 11-man football rather than hope someone's going to pull something amazing out of the bag."

Guernsey's last three games have all been against top-four sides, and they ended the tough run of fixtures with a record of having won one, lost one and drawn one.

"It shows the level we have to be at to get results," said Vance.

"We're an amateur team playing in a professional league so we're always going to be playing catch-up but we have some very, very good players and we've proved that."

Guernsey's next game sees them travel to mid-table Walton & Hersham and Vance - as usual, with his players' work commitments and holiday dates to contend with as well as injuries - is anticipating changes to his squad.

"We'll dust ourselves down and see what we've got and that's down to our situation," he said.

"I don't think I've managed to have the same squad [from one game to the next] so I'm sure we'll have some changes."
