Preston have won their appeal against Neil Kilkenny's red card at Port Vale, but striker Joe Garner has been suspended for three games instead.

Kilkenny, who is on loan from Bristol City, was dismissed by mistake following an altercation between Garner and Vale midfielder Anthony Griffith.

Garner went on to score both goals in Tuesday's 2-0 victory at Vale Park.

But he has been retrospectively punished and will begin a three-match ban against Bristol City on Saturday.

Manager Simon Grayson said: "We are hugely disappointed. We felt we had supplied sufficient evidence to think the decision would be overturned.

"I would like to thank Port Vale's Anthony Griffith for his co-operation in this matter. He has acted in a thoroughly professional manner.

"It's a shame the Football Association's panel were not willing to trust his word and come to a decision to clear Joe."

Former Watford and Carlisle front man Garner has netted seven goals in his last five appearances.
