Plymouth Argyle scored two second half goals to defeat Devon rivals Torquay United in League Two.

On-loan Sheffield Wednesday striker Caolan Lavery fired the home side ahead with a superbly-taken first-time strike on the hour mark.

And Lewis Alessandra chested in skipper Conor Hourihane's 85th-minute cross from the left for Plymouth's second.

The visitors' best chance fell to Jordan Chapell, who saw his 30-yard effort saved by Luke McCormick.

The Pilgrims are now just five points off a play-off spot, while Torquay remain in the the relegation zone, a point away from safety.
