Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes upbeat despite defeat by Motherwell

Derek McInnes insisted his Aberdeen team would learn from their 1-0 home defeat by Motherwell but would not become too downhearted because of it.

"If Motherwell come here and outplay us then it's different, but sometimes football can do that to you," said the manager.

"We've got to be better than we were today but we were the better team.

"We definitely deserved a lot more than we got but you don't always get what you deserve."

The only goal of the game was scored when Lionel Ainsworth rounded off a counter-attack four minutes into the second half after a good run by Henri Anier.

"I thought we lost a really untidy goal, I think it was their only real chance of any note," added McInnes.

"Yes, they took it well and, yes, they have defended well, but I thought we were the team who made more of the running, created more chances and had more shots.

"There is no shame in losing to a good Motherwell team. Motherwell have been consistent, we've had a couple of tight matches against them.

"We are not going to get too down and too disappointed. We won't let one disappointing result from the last five games affect what happens going forward.

"We will be ready to dust ourselves down and go again. We will learn from it."

For McInnes, the sore point was a failure to score when his team had the upper hand in the first half.

He added: "We made the running from the first minute and passed up a few opportunities. We never got the goal that we were hoping for.

"I said to the players not to let the frustration affect them in the second half.

"We felt that for periods in the first half we didn't move the ball quick enough and we allowed Motherwell to get behind the ball so we wanted to move the ball quicker.

"I told the players at the end of the game that when you are on top you've got to make it count."
