Forest Green Rovers have signed striker Lee Hughes on an 18-month contract from League One side Port Vale.

The 37-year-old ex-Coventry and West Brom player netted 14 goals in 34 outings after joining in last January's transfer window from Notts County.

Rovers manager Ady Pennock said: "He's come to play football, he's not come for money and I'm chuffed to have him on board.

"He has the experience we need and I believe he'll score goals."

Hughes, who was bought by Coventry from West Brom for £5m in August 2001, netted on his Vale debut in January 2013 as they won 2-1 at Gillingham.

Explaining his departure, Vale boss Micky Adams said: "We had a chat and Lee wants regular first-team football. He is a fantastic kid.

"He's not what the perception of him is and I wish him well. I have got great things to say about him."

He added: "We wish him well and we thank him for his contribution since he has been here, not least for all his goals in the promotion-winning season and certainly the big highlight for me was his three goals against Burton."
