Newport County 'frustrated' by Rodney Parade postponements

Chief executive Dave Boddy says Newport County have been left frustrated by the recent spate of postponements.

County's League Two match against Plymouth on Tuesday was postponed because of a waterlogged Rodney Parade pitch.

Four of Newport's last five scheduled home games have been called off.

"Clearly we've got problems with the pitch but the wet weather we've had has been unprecedented," Boddy said

"On three of the occasions our games have been called off there's been a glut of games called off elsewhere in the south west area.

"It's been totally frustrating. It's hitting the club in every respect.

"It's hitting us on the field. We've lost all the momentum we had before Christmas which lifted us into the play-off positions.

"Financially it's hitting us as well. Obviously four games out of anybody's cash flow is going to hurt any business."

Referee Keith Hill inspected the Rodney Parade pitch on Tuesday lunchtime and deemed the surface was unplayable.

The pitch suffered after heavy rain and had hosted the LV= Cup rugby match between Newport-Gwent Dragons and Northampton on Saturday.

Newport RFC also play at Rodney Parade but Boddy does not feel the root of the recent problems have been caused by the staging of rugby matches.

"I don't think the three teams are having a bearing on it at all," Boddy told Radio Wales Sport.

"The pitch prior to Saturday was in excellent condition. It was just the fact that a couple of areas are not draining well and the unprecedented rain."

Rodney Parade underwent drainage work during the summer after a number of games were called off during County's first season at their new home.

Boddy said it had not been possible to complete the improvements before the start of the current season.
