In the run-up to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, BBC Sport looked back at 100 of the greatest World Cup moments:
1. Beautiful Brazil

Brazil's captain Carlos Alberto finishes off a wonderful team move against Italy to complete a 4-1 win in the 1970 World Cup final.
It was the third time in four tournaments Brazil had triumphed, and they were allowed to keep the Jules Rimet trophy forever.
2. 1966 and all that

England's Geoff Hurst completes his hat-trick against West Germany in the final few moments of the 1966 World Cup final at Wembley, with BBC commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme uttering his famous line: "Some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over. It is now!"
Alf Ramsey's side won the match 4-2, securing England's first World Cup victory.
3. 'Pure football genius'

Diego Maradona scores his second goal for Argentina against England during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final - one which many consider to be the greatest individual goal ever scored.
4. Marco Tardelli's scream

Italy's Marco Tardelli performs his iconic celebration by running and screaming towards the touchline after scoring his country's second goal against West Germany in the 1982 World Cup final.
Italy went on to win 3-1 and secure their third World Cup.
5. France seal glory

Emmanuel Petit scores a breakaway goal in the final few moments of the 1998 World Cup final to seal a 3-0 victory for hosts France against Brazil and with it their first World Cup trophy.
6. The 'Game of the Century'

Italy beat West Germany 4-3 in the semi-finals in Mexico in 1970 in one of the greatest World Cup matches.
After 90 minutes, the teams were level at 1-1, but what followed was an incredible extra-time period including five goals.
The Azteca Stadium, which hosted the match, has a commemorative plaque outside the ground hailing the 'Game of the Century'.
7. The 'Miracle of Bern'

In arguably the most famous comeback in World Cup history, West Germany win the 1954 World Cup after rallying from two goals down to beat much-fancied Hungary 3-2 in Bern, Switzerland.
The match is known in Germany to this day as the 'Miracle of Bern'.
8. Glory for Mario Kempes

Argentina striker Mario Kempes scores two goals to help the hosts beat the Netherlands 3-1 and win their first World Cup in 1978.
Kempes finished top scorer at the tournament with six goals to claim the Golden Boot.
9. Paolo Rossi's hat-trick stuns Brazil

Paolo Rossi scores a memorable hat-trick for Italy in their 3-2 win against Brazil during the 1982 World Cup in Spain - a match many consider as one of the greatest in World Cup history.
The striker went on to claim the Golden Boot with six goals and help his country win their third World Cup.
10. Zinedine Zidane headbutts Marco Materazzi

France captain Zinedine Zidane headbutts Italy's Marco Materazzi in the chest during the 2006 World Cup final in Berlin in one of the most infamous moments in World Cup history.
Referee Horacio Elizondo was informed of the incident by the fourth official despite not seeing the incident, and showed Zidane a red card.
It was claimed months later that Materazzi had insulted Zidane's sister before the headbutt, but the sending-off proved to be the final chapter in Zidane's glittering career for France.
11. England's penalty despair

England's Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle miss their spot-kicks during the 1990 World Cup semi-final penalty shootout, as West Germany progress to the final.
12. Pele's cheeky lob

Brazil's Pele nearly scores an audacious goal from the halfway line after seeing Czech goalkeeper Ivo Viktor off his line during the 1970 World Cup group game.
The ball went just wide of the post, but Brazil still went on to win the match 4-1.
13. Michael Owen's wonder goal

Michael Owen scores a wonderful individual goal for England during their 1998 World Cup second-round match against Argentina.
Despite his moment of brilliance, England lost the match on penalties.
14. Italy stun Germany

Watch the dramatic end to the 2006 World Cup semi-final between hosts Germany and Italy, when Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero scored in the final few minutes of extra-time to send Italy through to the final.
15. Andres Iniesta's winner

Andres Iniesta scores the winning goal four minutes from the end of extra-time against the Netherlands at the 2010 tournament to secure Spain their first World Cup.
16. Brilliant Roberto Baggio

Italy's Roberto Baggio - at the time the most expensive player in the world - scores a wonderful individual goal in their group game against Czechoslovakia in Rome in 1990.
Baggio would go on to become one of the stars of the tournament as the hosts finished third.
17. David Narey stuns Brazil

Scotland defender David Narey stuns tournament favourites Brazil by scoring the opening goal of their group game at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
But that was as good as it got for Jock Stein's team, who eventually slipped to a comprehensive 4-1 defeat.
18. Geoff Hurst hits the crossbar

Geoff Hurst's shot strikes the crossbar and bounced down on the line during the 1966 World Cup final for England against West Germany.
Referee Gottfried Dienst has to consult his linesman Tofik Bakhramov to see whether the ball had crossed the line, but Bakhramov said it had and England were awarded the goal.
19. Gerd Muller seals glory

Gerd Muller scores the winner for West Germany against the Netherlands in the 1974 World Cup final, as the hosts recover from a goal down to win a dramatic final 2-1 and seal their second World Cup triumph.
20. Cheeky Ronaldinho

Brazil's Ronaldinho scores an audacious free-kick against England in the 2002 World Cup quarter-final, which floats over goalkeeper David Seaman's head from more than 30 yards out.
It gave Brazil a 2-1 lead and they held on to reach the semi-finals.
21. Roberto Baggio's penalty woe

Italy's Roberto Baggio misses the decisive penalty in the 1994 World Cup final shootout, which handed Brazil their fourth World Cup victory.
22. Frank Lampard's 'goal'

Frank Lampard's shot is not given as a goal by referee Jorge Larrionda during England's second-round match against Germany in 2010, despite replays showing it had clearly crossed the line.
The controversial incident led to widespread calls for Fifa to change its stance on goalline technology, which will be used in Brazil this summer.
23. Cynical Carlos fouls Bruno Bellone

France striker Bruno Bellone is controversially fouled by Brazil goalkeeper Carlos when through on goal during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final.
The foul is ignored by referee Ioan Igna, leading to BBC co-commentator Jimmy Hill calling it "an extreme mistake".
24. Fastest ever goal

Turkey's captain Hakan Sukur pounces on a defensive error to score after just 11 seconds against co-hosts South Korea in the 2002 third-fourth play-off, the fastest goal in World Cup history.
It beat the previous record of 16 seconds set by Czechoslovakia's Vaclav Masek in 1962.
25. England stunned by West Germany

Defending champions England throw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 against West Germany after extra-time during the 1970 World Cup quarter-final.
26. Antonio Rattin sent off

Referee Rudolf Kreitlein sends Argentina's captain Antonio Rattin off during England's 1966 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina at Wembley.
Rattin is so incensed by the decision he refuses to leave the field, leading to a lengthy delay.
27. Patrick Battiston knocked out

West German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher fouls France's Patrick Battiston during the 1982 semi-final in Seville in one of the most controversial incidents in World Cup history.
The defender is knocked unconscious and has to be given oxygen on the pitch, but referee Charles Corver only awards a goal kick rather than a penalty to France.
Schumacher managed to avoid a booking and went on to play a decisive role in the penalty shootout as West Germany reached the final.
28. Gazza's tears

England's Paul Gascoigne breaks down in tears at the 1990 World Cup, after he receives a booking in the semi-final against West Germany which would have ruled him out of the final if his side had got there.
Gazza's tears captured the hearts of many England fans both in the stadium and back home, though England went on to lose the match on penalties.
29. Saudi Arabia joy

Saudi Arabia's Saeed Al-Owairan runs from inside his own half against Belgium at USA '94 to score one of the great solo goals in World Cup history.
30. The 'Maracana Blow'

Brazil suffer arguably their most painful defeat, when in front of over 200,000 fans in the Maracana they lose 2-1 to neighbours Uruguay in the final match of the 1950 World Cup.
It secured Uruguay's second Jules Rimet trophy, but the manner of defeat deeply affected Brazilian football and society for many years after, and to this day is still known in Brazil as "Maracanazo" ("The Maracana Blow").
31. Gary Lineker's hat-trick

Gary Lineker scores a vital hat-trick for England against Poland to send his side through to the last 16 of the 1986 World Cup.
Lineker went on to score six goals in Mexico as he became the first - and still only - England player to claim the Golden Boot.
32. Nelinho's incredible goal

Brazil's Nelinho fires a wonderful curling shot past Italy's Dino Zoff in the third-place play-off match at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.
33. Frank Rijkaard spits at Rudi Voeller

Netherlands midfielder Frank Rijkaard controversially spits at West Germany's Rudi Voeller after the pair were sent off during their heated encounter in the 1990 World Cup.
34. The first ever Golden goal

France defender Laurent Blanc makes history against Paraguay during the 1998 World Cup by scoring the first ever World Cup golden goal to send the hosts through to the quarter-finals.
The golden goal rule - where the first goal scored in extra-time would end the match - was introduced by Fifa to make extra-time periods more exciting, but it was scrapped after the 2002 World Cup.
35. Fastest red card ever

Uruguay's Jose Batista is sent off inside the first minute for fouling Scotland's Gordon Strachan during the 1986 World Cup.
It remains the fastest red card in World Cup history.
36. Brazil's 1962 glory

Poor goalkeeping from Czechoslovakia's Viliam Schrojf hands Brazil a 3-1 win in the 1962 World Cup final in Santiago, Chile, and with it their second World Cup victory.
37. 'Disgrace' in Gijon

A look back to an infamous match at the 1982 World Cup between West Germany and Austria, when both sides knew that a slender win for the Germans would send both teams through to the second round at the expense of Algeria.
The match in Gijon indeed finished 1-0 to West Germany, leading to Algeria and neutral fans claiming the game had been fixed - allegations that were never proven despite an official Algerian protest.
38. David Platt's late winner

David Platt scores a brilliant volley in the last minute of extra time to send England through to the quarter finals at the expense of Belgium during the 1990 World Cup.
39. Argentina's controversial six goals

A look back to a controversial second-round match at the 1978 World Cup between hosts Argentina and Peru, which Argentina needed to win by four clear goals to reach the final.
The hosts went on to comfortably win 6-0, leading to claims that the game was fixed - although the allegations could not be proved.
40. David Beckham's redemption

David Beckham scores a crucial penalty to give England the lead against Argentina in the 2002 World Cup.
England would go on to win the match 1-0, and Beckham's goal went some way to make up for his red card against the same opposition four years earlier.
41. Jorge Burruchaga's winner

Jorge Burruchaga scores the winning goal for Argentina against West Germany in the 1986 World Cup final, which came with only six minutes remaining.
It gave Argentina a 3-2 victory, and secured their second World Cup trophy.
42. 'Toto' Schillaci arrives

Hosts Italy get their 1990 World Cup campaign up and running against Austria thanks to an unlikely hero in substitute Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci, who scored the only goal in the Group A opener.
He went on to claim the Golden Boot with six goals in the tournament.
43. Five goals for Oleg Salenko

Russia striker Oleg Salenko makes history at the 1994 World Cup against Cameroon by becoming the first - and still only - player to score five goals in a World Cup match.
Salenko went on to claim the Golden Boot with six goals alongside Bulgaria's Hristo Stoichkov, becoming the only player to do so from a team eliminated from the tournament in the first round.
44. Gordon Banks's wonder save

Gordon Banks makes an incredible save to deny Pele during England's 1970 World Cup group game against Brazil - a save widely acclaimed as the greatest in World Cup history.
45. Giovanni van Bronckhorst's thunderbolt

Netherlands captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst scores a stunning goal from 35 yards out to give the Dutch the lead against Uruguay during the 2010 World Cup semi-final.
His side went on to win 3-2 and reach their third World Cup final.
46. The 'hand of God'

Argentina's Diego Maradona uses his hand to score when jumping for the ball against England goalkeeper Peter Shilton during the tense 1986 quarter-final in Mexico City - one of the most infamous incidents in World Cup history.
The officials did not spot the offence and the goal was given, with Maradona later telling reporters he was helped by the 'Hand of God'.
47. Graham Poll's yellow card blunder

English referee Graham Poll mistakenly books Croatia's Josip Simunic three times in the second-half before sending him off against Australia during the 2006 World Cup group game.
48. Magnificent Pele

17-year-old Pele lights up the 1958 World Cup final with two second-half goals against hosts Sweden to help Brazil win their first World Cup with a 5-2 win.
The Brazilian players celebrated their triumph by parading the Sweden flag around the pitch to thank the home fans.
49. Bebeto's baby celebration

Bebeto - and two of his team-mates - celebrate his goal for Brazil against Netherlands during the 1994 World Cup quarter-final by making a cradle motion with his arms to mark the birth of his son days earlier.
Bebeto's goal helped Brazil to win 3-2, and they went on to beat Italy in a penalty shootout in the final to win the World Cup for the fourth time.
His child, Mattheus, now plays for Brazilian club Flamengo.
50. Brilliant Eusebio

Eusebio scores four goals to help Portugal come back from 3-0 down to beat underdogs North Korea 5-3 at Everton's Goodison Park during the 1966 World Cup quarter-finals.
51. Kevin Keegan's miss

England substitute Kevin Keegan puts a simple header wide of the post in their crucial second-round match against hosts Spain in the 1982 World Cup.
Had he scored, it would have given England a chance of making the semi-finals, but in the end the match finished goalless and both countries were eliminated.
52. Roger Milla's dance

Cameroon's Roger Milla performs his trademark dance by the corner flag after scoring twice against Colombia in the second round of the 1990 World Cup.
The victory put his side through to the last eight - becoming the first African team ever to reach the quarter-finals of a World Cup.
53. Luis Suarez's handball

Uruguay's Luis Suarez handles the ball on the line to deny Ghana a winner in the last minute of extra-time during their quarter-final at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Suarez was sent off while Ghana were given a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan hit the crossbar with his spot-kick to send the match into a penalty shoot-out, which Uruguay won 4-2.
54. David Beckham sent off

David Beckham is sent off for kicking Diego Simeone during England's dramatic second round match against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup in France.
He became at the time only the second player to be sent off for England at a World Cup, after Ray Wilkins received a red card in 1986.
55. Magic from Maxi Rodriguez

Argentina's Maxi Rodriguez scores a stunning extra-time goal to give his side a 2-1 win against Mexico in the second round of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
56. Brilliant Bulgaria beat Germany

Hristo Stoichkov and Iordan Letchkov score as Bulgaria come from behind to stun reigning world champions Germany 2-1 during the 1994 World Cup quarter-final.
57. Drama in Munich

Netherlands win a penalty in the opening minute before hosts West Germany had even touched the ball at the start of the dramatic 1974 World Cup final in Munich.
Despite the quickest World Cup final goal ever the Dutch would go on to lose 2-1.
58. Ronaldo's record

Ronaldo becomes the highest goalscorer in World Cup finals history after scoring in Brazil's 3-0 win against Ghana in the 2006 second-round match.
It was his 15th World Cup goal in total, overtaking Gerd Muller's tally of 14 goals.
59. Hungary score a record 10

Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 at the 1982 World Cup in Spain - the most amount of goals scored by one team in a World Cup match.
The Hungarians still failed to qualify for the second round, but the result ensured they entered the record books by beating the nine goals scored by both themselves against South Korea in 1954 and Yugoslavia against Zaire in 1974.
60. David Beckham's free-kick

David Beckham scores his first goal at a World Cup with a wonderful curling free-kick for England against Colombia in 1998.
England won the match 2-0 and would qualify for the second round.
61. Argentina see red

Argentina's Pedro Monzon and Gustavo Dezotti receive the first red cards handed out in a World Cup final as they are both sent off against West Germany in a bad-tempered final at Italia '90.
62. USA shock England

England lose 1-0 against part-timers USA during the 1950 tournament in Brazil - arguably their most embarrassing World Cup defeat.
63. Gerry Armstrong stuns Spain

Gerry Armstrong's goal gives Northern Ireland their most famous World Cup victory as they beat hosts Spain in Valencia during the 1982 tournament.
64. The 'Battle of Nuremberg'

Four players are sent off and 16 yellow cards are handed out - the most in any World Cup match in history - as Portugal beat Netherlands in a stormy encounter during the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The match is so bad-tempered it was latter dubbed the 'Battle of Nuremberg'.
65. Dutch belters

Ernie Brandts and Arie Haan score two long-range goals against Italy to send Netherlands through to the 1978 World Cup final.
66. Josimar's cracker

Brazil's Josimar scores a stunning long-range goal to beat Northern Ireland goalkeeper Pat Jennings during the 1986 World Cup.
67. South Korea gold

Ahn Jung-Hwan scores a golden goal in extra-time to knock Italy out and send South Korea through to the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup.
68. Wayne Rooney sees red

Wayne Rooney receives a red card during England's quarter-final against Portugal at the 2006 World Cup, after stamping on Ricardo Carvalho.
The Manchester United striker became the third England player to be sent off in a World Cup match - and Sven-Goran Eriksson's side went on to lose the match on penalties.
69. Pele's dummy

Pele sells Uruguay goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz a clever dummy that almost results in a goal for Brazil during their 1970 World Cup semi-final.
70. Nigel de Jong's 'karate kick'

Netherlands player Nigel de Jong is only shown a yellow card by referee Howard Webb for a chest-high kick at Spain's Xabi Alonso during the 2010 World Cup final.
The tackle looks so bad that commentator Guy Mowbray calls it a 'karate kick'.
71. Kuwait uproar

A controversial moment during the 1982 World Cup group game between France and Kuwait, when Kuwaiti players and staff remonstrate with the referee by claiming France's fourth goal should not stand as Kuwait heard a whistle in the crowd that they thought was the referee blowing for an infringement.
After a lengthy delay in play in which Kuwaiti FA president Prince Fahid got involved, the referee overruled his initial decision and disallowed the goal, to the fury of the French team.
72. Penalty joy for Republic of Ireland

Goalkeeper Pat Bonner and substitute David O'Leary send their fans into ecstasy as the Republic of Ireland beat Romania in a penalty shoot-out to progress to the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals.
73. Ronaldo redeemed

Ronaldo scores both goals in the 2002 World Cup final against Germany to help Brazil win their fifth World Cup and help him banish the memories of the 1998 final, when he failed to live up to expectations.
74. Bobby Charlton's screamer

Bobby Charlton scores a stunning goal against Mexico at Wembley to help England get their 1966 World Cup campaign up and running.
75. Iran beat USA

Iran beat the United States 2-1 during the 1998 World Cup in one of the most politically-charged matches in history.
76. Red for Ray Wilkins

Ray Wilkins becomes the first England player to be sent off in a World Cup finals match after throwing the ball at referee Gabriel Gonzalez Roa during the group game against Morocco at the 1986 World Cup.
77. North Korea shock Italy

One of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, as Pak Do-Ik's goal gives North Korea a famous 1-0 victory over Italy at Ayresome Park in Middlesbrough during the 1966 tournament.
78. Andres Escobar's own goal

Colombia defender Andres Escobar scores an own goal to give hosts USA the lead in a tragic moment during the 1994 World Cup.
Colombia would go on to lose the match and come last in the group, and Escobar was murdered when he returned to his hometown of Medellin, seemingly as revenge for his role in his country's elimination.
79. Joe Cole's volley

Chelsea's Joe Cole scores a stunning volley from 35 yards out to give England the lead against Sweden at the 2006 World Cup.
80. Maradona Magic

Diego Maradona scores a wonderful individual goal to help Argentina to a 2-0 semi-final victory over Belgium in the 1986 World Cup semi-final.
81. Johan Cruyff's turn

Netherlands star man Johan Cruyff shows off his famous piece of trickery against Sweden - later dubbed the 'Cruyff turn' - during the 1974 World Cup group stage.
82. Amazing Algeria beat West Germany

Debutants Algeria cause a major upset when they beat reigning European champions West Germany 2-1 at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
83. Rivaldo's 'injury'

Brazil's Rivaldo causes controversy after he feigns injury when the ball is kicked towards him by Turkey defender Hakan Unsal during the 2002 World Cup.
It led to Unsal being sent off, but the TV cameras caught Rivaldo's delayed reaction.
84. Glory for Archie Gemmill

Archie Gemmill scores a sublime solo effort for Scotland against much-fancied Netherlands at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.
Scotland went on to beat the Dutch 3-2, but were eliminated on goal difference by them.
85. The 24-pass goal

Esteban Cambiasso finishes off a breathtaking 24-pass move for Argentina against Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 World Cup.
86. Garrincha's curler

Garrincha fires a wonderful curling shot against England's Ron Springett to help Brazil secure a 3-1 quarter-final victory over England at the 1962 World Cup.
87. Ray Houghton fells Italy

Ray Houghton scores a memorable goal against Italy at USA '94 to secure the Republic of Ireland's most famous World Cup victory.
88. East Germany defeat West Germany

Jurgen Sparwasser's goal gives East Germany a famous 1-0 win over their neighbours West Germany during the 1974 tournament in one of the most politically-charged matches in World Cup history.
89. Bobby Moore's tackle on Jairzinho

England captain Bobby Moore makes a perfectly-timed tackle to prevent Jairzinho from scoring during their famous 1970 World Cup group game against Brazil.
90. Yakubu's incredible open-goal miss

Nigeria striker Yakubu misses an open-goal against South Korea during the 2010 World Cup.
91. Bryan Robson scores after 27 seconds

England's 1982 World Cup campaign kicks off in dramatic fashion when Bryan Robson scores after only 27 seconds against France.
92. Pele carried off

Brazil's Pele is carried off the Goodison Park pitch after being badly injured against Portugal during the 1966 World Cup in England.
It meant the most famous footballer in the world would not play any further part in the tournament, and the reigning champions would be eliminated.
93. Cameroon stun Argentina

Francois Omam-Biyik's goal causes a major upset as unfancied Cameroon beat reigning champions Argentina in the opening match of the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
94. Clive Thomas denies Zico

Welsh referee Clive Thomas blows the final whistle seconds before Zico scores what would have been the winning goal for Brazil against Sweden during the 1978 World Cup.
95. The 'Battle of Santiago'

Italy have two men sent off in a violent encounter with Chile at the 1962 World Cup, a match later dubbed the 'Battle of Santiago'.
96. Zaire's free-kick farce

Zaire's Mwepu Ilunga runs out of his team's wall to kick a Brazil free-kick away in this bizarre incident from the 1974 World Cup.
97. Senegal shock France

Debutants Senegal stun the reigning world and European champions France in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup.
98. Manuel Negrete's wonder goal

Mexico midfielder Manuel Negrete produces some incredible acrobatics to score a wonder goal for the host side against Bulgaria in this 1986 second-round clash.
99. Diego Maradona's crazed celebration

Diego Maradona produces a demonic celebration after scoring against Greece in 1994.
Maradona subsequently tested positive for ephedrine doping and was banned from the tournament, with Argentina eliminated in the second round.
100. Bergkamp's stunner against Argentina

Arsenal's Dennis Bergkamp produces a moment of magic in injury-time to send the Netherlands through in their 1998 quarter-final against Argentina.
