York regained their place in the League Two play-off zone with a narrow victory over rock-bottom Torquay.

The Minstermen opened the scoring through Will Hayhurst with his 18-yard strike finding the top corner thanks to a deflection off Aaron Downes.

The visitors went close to an equaliser but Lee Mansell saw his free-kick pushed around the post by Nick Pope.

Goalkeeper Martin Rice then palmed away Adam Reed's powerful drive to deny York a second goal.

York City manager Nigel Worthington told BBC Radio York:

"I thought we started the game off very well. The first 25 minutes we got the goal which is obviously key.

"Then the last 20 minutes of the first half I thought we got a bit untidy with our play.

"Another goal would have been nice to kill the game off, but I thought we managed the game very well.

"We limited them and did our job well."
