Jermaine McGlashan's goal earned a 1-0 victory for Cheltenham at fellow mid-table outfit Hartlepool.
McGlashan netted from close range 16 minutes from time after Darren Holden failed to clear David Noble's cross.
Bradley Walker and Jack Barmby went close with first-half efforts for Hartlepool, while Jack Compton put a free header wide after the break.
James Poole almost equalised for Colin Cooper's men but his late attempt was blocked by team-mate Luke James.
Cheltenham Town manager Mark Yates told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"I thought we thoroughly deserved that win, it was a really great game of football with two teams trying to pass and trying to get on it.
"Although we looked a threat, we just felt we looked too open in wide areas and they were getting some good deliveries, particularly down the left in the first 10 to 15 minutes.
"We changed it and locked it up a little bit and it actually helped us pass the ball more.
"Byron [Harrison] worked tirelessly, there were some really good glimpses and I thought he should have got a penalty seconds before the goal."
