Arsene Wenger: Arsenal loss to Chelsea was 'my fault'

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said he takes "full responsibility" for his team's 6-0 defeat by title rivals Chelsea, describing the loss as one of the worst days in his career.

Chelsea enjoyed their biggest victory against the Gunners, who were 2-0 behind before Kieran Gibbs's controversial 15th-minute sending off.

"This is my fault," said Wenger after his 1,000th game in charge of the club.

"We got a good hiding. You don't prepare all week to experience that."

Wenger became only the fourth manager - after Sir Matt Busby, Dario Gradi and Sir Alex Ferguson - to reach the 1,000-match landmark with one English club.

But English football's current longest-serving manager said he wanted to quickly move on from the defeat, the joint-heaviest margin of loss during his 17-year tenure at Arsenal, the other being the 8-2 defeat at Manchester United in August 2011.

"I don't think there's too much need to talk about the mistakes we made," said the 64-year-old Frenchman.

"It's how we respond now on Tuesday night [against Swansea] and the best way is not to explain too much the mistakes."

Former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson described the performance as "embarrassing" and blamed Wenger for the heavy defeat.

"He (Wenger) said this is the most important game of the season," Robson told BBC Radio 5 live. "But did the players look like they were up for the biggest game of the season? Did he look like he got the tactics right for one that would define their championship chase?

"It was an embarrassing and hapless performance, but one I've seen for the last few years.

"The same mistakes happen time and time again. If you are a good coach, mistakes don't keep happening."

Robson, who played more than 150 games for the Gunners between 1981 and 1986, believes the defeat has ended Arsenal's hopes of landing their first title in 10 years.

He added: "There is no chance for Arsenal now. It was shown again that when pressure is put on by big teams they are not tactically or physically up for it."

Arsenal were sloppy in possession during what was a poor opening 15 minutes by the visitors.

The Gunners were two behind after seven minutes, with first Samuel Eto'o and then Andre Schurrle benefiting from clinical Chelsea counter-attacking.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain conceded a penalty for handling Eden Hazard's curling effort and the Belgian converted from the spot, but referee Andre Marriner appeared to send off the wrong player by dismissing Kieran Gibbs.

A brace from Oscar and a Mohamed Salah strike late on ensured Jose Mourinho enjoyed his biggest Premier League victory as Chelsea manager.

Arsenal, seven points adrift of leaders Chelsea in third, host Manchester City on Saturday after a midweek match against Swansea.
