Luis Suarez will not start for Uruguay in their Group D opener with Costa Rica on Saturday in Fortaleza, according to manager Oscar Tabarez.

The Liverpool striker has returned to full training for the first time since his knee operation on 21 May.

But Tabarez named his starting side, which did not include Suarez's name, at a news conference on Friday.

However the Uruguay boss has not ruled out Suarez playing some stage of the match.

Diego Forlan will partner Paris St-Germain's Edinson Cavani in attack.

"We're just about to go out and train on the pitch now and you never know what will happen," Tabarez said.

"We are increasing (Suarez's) pace of recovery and up until now there have been no glitches.

"Yesterday afternoon Suarez did the most important thing in training, which is play football.

"We still have one day to go. We don't want to jump the gun. We have prepared not to have him, but it would be wonderful to have him. We have to be very careful."

Suarez scored 31 league goals as Liverpool finished runners-up to Manchester City in the 2013-14 Premier League campaign.

Former Manchester United striker Forlan, 35, who now plays in Japan for Cerezo Osaka, has recovered from a stomach bug.

Uruguay are in England's group and face Roy Hodgson's team on 19 June before playing Italy on 24 June.
