World Cup 2014: England v Uruguay is 'life or death' game

Uruguay are bottom of Group D after losing their opening game against Costa Rica on Saturday

Uruguay's game against England on Thursday represents "life or death" for both sides in this World Cup, according to captain Diego Lugano.

The teams meet in Sao Paulo looking for their first points in Group D after Uruguay were beaten 3-1 by Costa Rica and England lost 2-1 to Italy.

Central defender Lugano said: "Now we're united again. Our faith is intact. We mustn't lose our heads.

"We must keep having fun. It's not going to be easy. We have to improve."

Lugano is particularly aware of the threat England can pose having spent last season at West Bromwich Albion.

"The English players are fast and strong," said the 33-year-old. "That demands a lot of the defenders."

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez did not figure against Costa Rica despite having recovered from a knee injury, but could face England and says he feels "100%" ahead of Thursday's game.

"We hope Luis plays, but, if not, it's up to the rest of us," said Lugano.

Coach Oscar Tabarez said England "deserved better luck against Italy".

He added: "It's a tough game but not impossible. We need a victory in order to progress and they do, too."
