Southend United: Myles Weston lured by promotion bid

Winger Myles Weston says he has joined Southend United after two years at Gillingham in the expectation that the club will win promotion next season.

The Shrimpers lost to Burton in last term's League Two play-off semi-final after finishing fifth in the table.

"I feel like there is no reason why we can't get promoted this season," the 26-year-old told BBC Essex.

"Losing in the play-offs will make the squad hungry to go again. We can use that and fight to get promoted."

Former Notts County and Brentford wideman Weston played 43 times for the Gills last term, having scored eight times to help them win the League Two title in the previous campaign.

But he was released by the Kent club this summer and agreed drop down a division to join Phil Brown's side on a two-year deal.

"I was obviously talking to other clubs but I felt this was the best move for me," he said.

"I like what the manager wants to do at the club and I want to be part of it.

"Southend kept 20 clean sheets last season. If we can keep the same number of clean sheets and add some more goals that will be enough to get us promoted."
