Carlisle United have signed midfielder Danny Kearns on a two-year deal following his release by Peterborough at the end of last season.

The 22-year-old began his career at West Ham before a move to Dundalk and he also played for Peterborough, York, Rotherham and Chesterfield.

Kearns has Republic of Ireland honours up to the under-23 level.

"He can play as a number 10, or wide on the left or the right," boss Graham Kavanagh told the club website., external

"Danny will add competition right across the midfield. He's a ball carrier and a provider.

"I think the only thing he needs to improve is scoring goals but he'll provide a lot for the team."

With Troy Archibald-Henville, Gary Dicker and Billy Paynter among the five other arrivals at Brunton Park this summer, United are making progress with strengthening the squad, but Kavanagh is still keen to add to the pool.

"If I could get two strikers, a midfielder and a goalkeeper in I would be very happy with the squad," he added.

"We've got a good core of players, so if we can get those four in we'll have a look at the budget we've got left and see if there's anything else we can do."
