Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 Blackburn Rovers

Bakary Sako netted the winner at Fulham earlier this month and scored twice against Blackburn

Wolves continued their excellent start to the Championship season with a home victory over Blackburn at Molineux.

Nouha Dicko flicked in Kevin McDonald's cross to put them ahead and Bakary Sako's free-kick made it 2-0.

Blackburn, without injured striker Rudy Gestede, came back into the match with a Jordan Rhodes penalty after the striker had been fouled by Danny Batth.

But Mali international Sako restored the home side's two-goal advantage from 12 yards after good work from Dicko.

League One champions Wolves have impressed since returning to the second tier and continued their good form with a fourth win in five league outings, beating a Blackburn team tipped to be in contention for a top-six place at the end of the campaign.

The hosts scored with the first meaningful attack, with former Wigan striker Dicko netting his second goal of the season.

Rovers were denied a freakish equaliser by Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who saved well after winger Ben Marshall had charged down Batth's clearance, while Ikeme later kept out a long-range set-piece from the same player.

Sako fired through a crowded penalty area to double the home side's lead and it could have been worse for the visitors before half-time, with Dave Edwards, Dicko and Rajiv van La Parra spurning further opportunities.

Full-back Matt Doherty saw an effort saved by Paul Robinson as Wolves attempted to kill off the game after the break.

They were pegged back to 2-1 when Rhodes, the subject of recent interest from Premier League side Hull City, sent Ikeme the wrong way from the spot.

But Wolves, who gave debuts to George Saville and Tommy Rowe from the bench, sealed it with Sako's second and Ikeme tipped Craig Conway's shot over the bar to prevent a nervy finale.

"Sako has been really good in my time here I have always generally picked him which is a reflection of what a manager thinks of a player.

"I think he is a very good player. I think he is a very good character. They will be the two things in my time here that I will judge him on.

"Sako, [Nouha] Dicko and Rajiv van La Parra has been a productive front three for us and they have looked dangerous and combined well and if we can keep up this good work then we will be very happy."

Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer:

"We came to a difficult place with a very good manager against a well-organised team and I thought that we had a lot of the play.

"We were disappointed with the manner of the goals that the conceded and there were one or two incidents leading up to the second that we felt let down by.

"I think we had a lot of the ball, especially in the second-half where Wolves were playing on the counter but goals change matches and we conceded three soft ones in our opinion."
