Women's Super League: Chelsea beat Birmingham to go top

Chelsea moved two points clear at the top of the Women's Super League with a 3-1 win over previous leaders Birmingham City.

Ji So-Yun, Gilly Flaherty and Eni Aluko scored the goals as Birmingham lost the league's only unbeaten record.

Liverpool beat Notts County 1-0 to climb into to second place, with Katie Zelem scoring the only goal.

At the other end of the table, Arsenal pulled off a surprise 4-0 victory over title hopefuls Manchester City.

Chelsea 3-1 Birmingham City

Chelsea ran out deserved winners against Birmingham after a commanding performance.

The hosts took the lead in the 33rd minute, South Korean striker Ji heading in an Ana Borges cross.

Birmingham captain Karen Carney sent a free header over the bar just before half-time.

And that miss proved costly as centre-back Flaherty volleyed in Chelsea's second goal from a Ji corner seven minutes into the second half.

The visitors put themselves back in contention when central defender Aoife Mannion forced home as the Chelsea defence failed to clear a 65th-minute corner.

But within three minutes the visitors conceded a third, striker Aluko glancing in a header from a curling Ji free-kick to seal the win.

Liverpool 1-0 Notts County

Zelem scored the only goal as Liverpool clinched a narrow victory over Notts County.

The visitors twice went close through Jess Clarke and Aileen Whelan in the first half.

Liverpool improved after the break and striker Natasha Dowie headed against a post from a 53rd-minute Fara Williams free-kick.

Nine minutes later, winger Gemma Davison was denied when her shot was saved brilliantly by Carly Telford.

But Telford could do nothing to keep out midfielder Zelem's volley from Davison's accurate 74th-minute cross.

Manchester City 0-4 Arsenal

Four different players found the net as Arsenal recorded their best result of the season at Manchester City.

The visitors went ahead after just five minutes, midfielder Jordan Nobbs lobbing goalkeeper Karen Bardsley.

The Gunners second came 13 minutes into the second half, striker Danielle Carter firing home a powerful shot.

And 10 minutes later the game was effectively won as Rachel Yankey scored from close range following a Turid Knaak cross.

Just for good measure, captain Casey Stoney added a fourth goal for the Gunners with a low effort in the 82nd minute.
